And the sun did come! It only took another 5 days of full on rain. Fortunately, we were able to stay with some warmshower hosts on the way. It really helps to keep you sane when you are able to at least be out of the rain at night. It also helps that the Oregon Coast is truly beautiful, even in the mist and fog and rain. Steep cliffs (which means lots of hills) take turns with amazing, never ending beaches. Sea lions, seals and even whales are everywhere. Once the sun does come out, it’s all unicorns and rainbows. Blue sky, blue ocean, sandy sunny beaches, happiness.
After riding some very scary Highway sections to get to the coast - like the busy HW 40 with no shoulder at all or only inches of a shoulder which was usually overgrown or falling apart – the 101 felt almost like a European bike lane.
Right now we are ‘stuck’ in a little town half way down the Coast as a major storm is supposed to hit the Coast today and a second one rolling in Saturday and Sunday. Hurricane force winds, high surf and a lot of rain along with flooding is in the forecast. Not the best cycling conditions, time to write a blog and do our laundry and just enjoy a dry, warm motel room while the rain is falling :)
Kathy and Dave for hosting us in their beautiful home in Seattle, feeding us amazing, home made pizza and baking us cookies for the road as well as supplying us with the invaluable Adventure Cycling Maps.
The amazing warmshower hosts Neil (in Seaside) and Bruce (in Tillamook) for being so welcoming and hosting us in their homes.
