+ Rainy weather of Oregon in November
+ Badly rutted and dusty roads of South western Bolivia
+ Mega steep, leg breaking hills of Ecuador
+ The most magnificent scenery you will hardly ever see through the rain clouds
+ More wind that your bike and your sanity can handle
= and you have the “Carretera Austral”
So, yes it wasn’t always unicorns and rainbows, type two fun I would say - not fun at the time but after when you are dry and warm sitting inside somewhere looking at your stunning photos. Luckily most of the time when we were soaking wet to the bone (the best GoreTex clothing won’t keep you dry here) we would find some sort of hideout with a heavenly warm fireplace to dry us and all our stuff out for the next round. I am thinking a dry suite would have been a better choice over GoreTex jacket and rain pants. Our hands are often the driest part of our bodies, thanks to our 1 $ dish washing gloves – the best “GoreTex” out there.
